We have been planning to extend the bedroom/bath for about a year now. In fact it was part of the first major remodel but we couldn't build then because the ground was settling in this area. The extension will replace the existing deck and will match the size of the view room providing balance to the rear of the house. (See proposed view) It will provide Hoddi with a walk in closet and me with something that I think I will enjoy as old age rushes up to devour me; a Jacuzzi tub!!! The first step is to remove the old deck. After the deck is removed it will be digging time again. The dirt removed for the foundation will be used to fill in the area last visited in a 2007 project.

5-2-08, Stage 1A is complete. The deck has been removed. Stage 1B will be to add on to the deck that is left. This will recycle some of the material that I removed and also replace some of the lost deck space.

5-9-08, Stage 1B has been delayed due to a design change. Because we decided to continue the deck at all the same level I had to remove more of the old deck (lower level). This will also provide access to under the deck so that I can fill the area that has settled (red circles). The settling was caused by a previous house on the site that had a basement. All the good dirt that was used in the old flower beds has also been moved to the 2007 project and that area can now be planted. The settling seems to have stopped so I think it is safe to fill it in and start on the deck extension. Stage 1A1 is now complete.

5-16-08. Nothing graphic to show this week. Have been working on more of the preparation work. Had to dig a ditch 2 feet deep and 15 feet long for
drain pipe, which took the better part of 2 days. A heat wave hit the area for 3 days (30 degrees above normal 90s) so I only worked a half of the day.
Now proceeding on to stage 1B. The fill operation can now be started and the new stairs must be in place before I start on the deck construction and
I am now working on that.

5-23-08. The new stairs and the stone wall to keep critters from under the deck are in place. The new support beam is also in place. Am now starting
to dig the foundation and move the dirt to the depression in the yard and under the deck. You can really see how deep it is now.

5-30-08. Finished the new stairs with a concrete landing so I can put a fork in that and call it done! The fill under the deck area is finished and I have
started reconstructing it. The plan is to install seating along the outside edge of the deck (have not decided on how to do that yet but it will come to me
soon). When my arm gets tired from pounding nails I go do some more digging.

6-6-08. Another week has gone by and it has rained for 4 days. Good thing I made a lot of progress before it started. I did get the deck reconstructed
and only started to move dirt when the rain started. Oh well I guess I can use the rest and it gave me a chance to go to Randy's to finish some of the
details in his man cave.

6-11-08. We have been having some weird weather out here in the Pacific NW. It is what I would expect for Jan. or Feb., not June!!!
We've had so much rain I had to get a large tarp to cover the hole so I did not end up with a swimming pool. I have moved enough dirt to finish the fill portion of the project and I think I figured out how to stop the rain. I put in my grass seed so it will probably stop raining. That's why I have the water sprinkler on standby.

Now it is on to the digging!!! Updates will be less frequent unless you like to watch grass grow or the piles of dirt get bigger

6-15-08 Well the digging went faster than I thought!! The footer is dug and ready for concrete. I have contacted the concrete contractor and he is ready to go. Now it is a matter of waiting for the permit, about 3 weeks. There are a few other things that I can do to get ready such as cut a hole in the existing foundation for access to the new area and prep the edge of the deck for attachment to the new part of the house. I can also catch up on all the other stuff I have been neglecting like trim that hedge over there on the right....

6-24-08 Must be living right or something!!! Got my permit on Friday, the concrete guys came on Monday to install the forms, today is Tuesday and
we completed 4 city inspections and the concrete may be poured this Friday. Even the grass is growing fast (circled below). Wow, don't know if I can
handle this speed at my age!!! Probably get whip lash!!!

6-29-08 Concrete forms are off and I have been able to install the drain pipe around the foundation and also the downspout pipe which is on top of it.
After inspection, scheduled for tomorrow morning, I can do the back fill and get rid of all the dirt.

6-30-08 Passed the drain inspection and put the dirt back in the hole. Looks a lot better now. I have installed the border and planted the additional
grass seed. Speaking of grass, notice the first batch of new grass, had to mow it yesterday. Next step is to remove the dirt from inside the foundation
for the crawl space. It all has to go down to the level of the wheelbarrow, about 28". That will take a while.

7-9-08 Have made some progress with the removal of the dirt from the crawl space. The weather is rather warm so I rigged the tarp to provide some
shade to work in. I do feel like Indiana Jones at one of his archaeological digs. I have found a few artifacts like part of an old range a couple of concrete
blocks and something all twisted and bent that is unidentifiable.

7-14-08 The wood is on order and will be delivered tomorrow. The door has arrived, windows should be here this Thursday. The truss people came out today to take measurements and said that the trusses should be delivered at the end of the week.
WOW!! Everything is still moving along very fast. Have removed the rim joist and the siding from the house and am ready to start construction.

7-16-08 The lumber has arrived and I have been doing all those things that have to happen under the floor (installing main beam, cutting access in the old foundation, and installing the sill). Tomorrow I will start installing the floor joists and hopefully have my next inspection on Friday. I also got the water
sprinkler system installed so I no longer have to use the hose to water the grass (circled in red).

7-25-08 Have been very busy working on the flooring and all the stuff that has to go under it. Have completed the heat ducting, cold water plumbing and the vapor barrier is in place. Flooring is done and now starting on the walls. That big beam will go above the door and window on the west wall.
WOW!!! Got a lot of wood butchering done today!!! Assembled the three walls and with the help from my friend Mike, his two boys, and the neighbor across the street, Roger we raised them into position. After we got the walls up we all took time for lunch. I had a beer and some hot links and they had some barbecue and soft drinks (they were driving or under age). I think we deserved it after lifting those heavy walls!!!

7-30-08 Had quite a storm last night, lots of rain and wind that attempted to rip the tarp off but it held. Well today is truss day and a friend of mine
(Mike Cline) has volunteered to help with the roof. We were able to get all but the beam truss in place. Tomorrow we will start installing the sheeting.

8-6-08 The roof sheeting is almost complete. I hope to finish it today and call for inspection tomorrow. I have scheduled a company to come on Friday to put shingles on the roof. That will make us water tight so that I can go to Greece (27 Aug.) and finish when I get back.

8-11-08 Roof is complete. I have reached my primary goal of being under roof in time to go to Greece and a whole 16 days ahead of schedule!!!
The door has been installed and we are secure. All that remains is to install the siding and I am ready to go. The siding should not take too long as it is mostly windows. I do however have to finish nailing the wall sheeting and get it inspected again before I can do the siding.

8-12-08 Still moving at break neck speed!! Called for an afternoon inspection in order to finish nailing in the morning. They now have peel and stick flashing for the windows, makes it very easy to do. It passed and also passed the flooring inspection!! WOW two inspections passed in one day.
Now I can move on to the siding. While waiting for the inspection I decided to clear off insulation and other debris to prepare for interior construction.

8-19-08 The siding process is a slow and tedious one. First the whole structure must be covered with tar paper to prevent penetration of moister. Next moldings are installed around all the windows. Then each piece of siding must be cut to length. It is then applied keeping it level and straight. Just finished the east wall.

We have had a bit of rainy weather so I spent the time inside doing electrical work. I had to pull 2 new circuits and install a new exhaust fan in the old bathroom. The existing fan was just that a fan. The new one has a fan, a light and also puts out heat for when I want to take a shower on a cold winter night.

8-24-08 Well I made it. Two days before departure and it is 100% water tight. Even had time to get the new gutters installed. Let the rains begin.
Now all I have to do is pack up my stuff and get ready to travel!!! Will update again when I return.

10-1-08 Well we made it back from Greece OK. Have started to work on the project again but moving very slowly... still trying to adjust to the
11 hour time difference!! I have finished the deck in front of the bedroom door, picked up the new tub, placed the new cabinets, and installed one of the
pocket doors. Next I will start work on the platform for the tub and the the interior walls.

10-18-08 I have been working on a lot of the detail stuff that does not show up very well in pictures. I will attempt to provide a verbal update.
The carpentry (what I refer to as wood butchering) is complete. Have also finished the electrical and mechanical (heating). Part of the sheet rock is up.
I have started on the plumbing. Part of the plumbing requires crawling around under the house. Not looking forward to that ...Very nasty under there!!
The underlayment for the tile floor in the bathroom is on site and ready for installation (has to happen before the plumbing can be completed).

11-03-08 Not a lot visual has happened since last update. The drains (that nasty stuff under the house) have all been hooked up. The water pipes are through the floor but still have to be hooked up to the supply lines. All the sheet rock in the bathroom is installed along with the underlayment for the floor tile. The whirlpool tub is also installed. Speaker boxes are in place and I am ready to start installing the sheet rock and insulation on the ceiling. Have completed construction of the special cabinet for the stereo. Had to do a real "Rube Goldberg" on this item. I needed a cabinet 17" deep and they only come in 12" wall units, which I needed for the top, and 24" base units, which I used for the bottom.. With a little cutting here and a little glue there I came up with what you see below.

11-13-08 Major change today. Moved all the bedroom furniture to another room and removed the old wall between the old and new sections of the bedroom. Now I can precede with the construction of the walk-in closet and install the sheet rock to the ceiling.

11-20-08 Removed the old carpet and installed the walk-in closet. Have also installed most of the above floor insulation.

12-23-08 Still working on the project but nothing visual to post. Have replaced the old folding closet doors with mirror doors and completed the inside of both closets. Cold weather and a lot of snow has delayed my next inspection (plumbing) as I have to go to the roof and fill the drain pipe with water. They call it "being on test". When I get that done I can precede to installing the sheet rock to the ceiling and the walls.

1-10-09 Finally I have a visual update! Have passed several inspections and can now move on to the installation of the sheet rock. First to go up is the ceiling. Thanks to the invention of the sheet rock jack (that yellow thing in the picture) I was able to install it as a one-man operation. Had to work late but I was able to get done in one day.
