This is the location of the next big project. The plan is to build a deck in the front of the house about the size of the shop on the other side of the house to make it look more balanced. 1st step (photo at right) is to prepare the ground. A concrete mowing strip is the first thing being installed. Then I can finish the new grass in that area.

In order to finish the mowing strip around the perimeter of the new grass area I wanted to redesign an existing flower bed (photo on left) to enhance the appearance of the small maple tree in the center. The area is now ready for installation of the forms for pouring the concrete mowing strip.

Finally got all the concrete work finished. The reason for time lapse is that I had to tie in with some existing features in the side yard at the gate (center).

Well I just thought I was finished with the concrete work!! I want to save the Clematis that is growing on the old wood trellis at the entrance to the back yard, but I decided to replace the trellis with an arbor to match the one on the other side of the house. Now that I found one I decided to also replace the chain link fence that separates the front and back yard. That means new fence as well. I now have new concrete forms in place for this sub project and waiting for the new fence/posts/gate to arrive ....... stay tuned ....... will post update when I get it done.

It has been over a week and still no gate/fence. I decided to install the stone foundation that will keep critters from getting under the deck. We have skunks in the area and all I need is for them to take up residence under the deck!!! Other details also done include; relocating rhododendron plants, relocating faucets for the watering system, and sloping ground away from house for drainage. I am also leveling the planting bed around the outside of the stones so Hoddi can start her planting.

Another week and still no gate/fence! GRRRRR#%#*&!! Oh well. I might as well start on the install of the beams that will carry the deck and finish sloping the ground. I also created the curved (actually segmented) 2X8 that will cover that part of the deck and installed the shrub watering system

Still no fence so I canceled the order and reordered it from someone else. I might as well install the new windows. Oh, did I forget to mention I am replacing the old wooden windows with fiberglass ones. I am making them look like one big window instead of two as before. Also picked up a bunch of lumber so I can really start the construction wagon rolling. I finally got the other house finished so I can concentrate on this one.

Started putting down the decking. I have my first load in place and just picked up the 2nd one. Have also decided the size of the column and the base for it.

Have been making good progress on the decking. Have been working on other parts of the project while I give my arm a rest from pounding nails. Have put in 35 pounds of them so far. One of the other parts of the project is the support posts for the columns. The first two are in and I will be installing the columns soon. The columns will not be supporting any weight so I decided to make my own. I will be using 8" PVC pipe for the job.

A lot has been done since last update. The decking has been completed. The first column is complete. All but 2 of the column bases are done. Work on the curved portion of the pergola has been started. Details of the column base are below. First, I pour the main part (colored red) of the base, leaving a hole in the middle. Next, I dig a post hole in the center of it and add the 4x4 column support and more concrete making a lip is for the column to fit over. The columns start life as 8" PVC sewer pipe. A nice coat of paint works wonders!

Making the curved assemblies was kind of tricky. (1) First I installed additional supports in the ground half way between the permanent ones and added support for the structure to them all. 1/4 inch thick siding boards are curved to the shape desired. (2) Spacer blocks are then glued to one side of the structure. (3) A second 1/4 inch board is then glued to the blocks. (4) After all the glue has dried the gaps between the blocks are filled with an expandable foam. (5) After the foam stops expanding (6) it is trimmed off and sanded smooth. (7) Finally, the air bubbles and other voids are filled with an exterior spackling and sanded smooth. All that is left is the painting.

All the columns are now installed and the top beams are in place. Have started to cut the cross beams. Also installed the new entry platform and covered the area between the columns with stone. Getting close to completion but it will have to wait till I get back from vacation.

Didn't think I would have time to finish before I went on vacation! Surprise!! Got it all done (well almost). Still needs the final coat of paint but it is ready for the rains that I am sure will come before I return. Also needs flagstone walkway, final decorating, and grass to be planted.

Here is what the view from the street is now. I think it added a little "Curb Appeal".

Project Complete.
